Asbestos Removers – Hazardous Material Workers
Asbestos Workers, Mould Removers, Fire Stopping, Sprayed Polyurethane Applicators, Polypropylene Plastic Sheet Membrane Applicators and/Air Vapour Barriers are exclusive and special trades IUPAT represents throughout Ontario. These workers require specialized training and perform their craft in areas that are usually restricted.
Currently there is an expansion at the IFSTC for training in health and safety and skills upgrading. Your Union and contractors have applied to the MTCU for apprenticeship status to have the workers in this industry certified. We will keep you posted on the progress!!
The mandatory health & safety certificates are required prior to starting work!
Working conditions in these crafts are varied;
- Hours of work are 44 hours per week
- Overtime is paid after 44 hours worked at time and one-half except statutory holidays is at double time the regular hourly rate
- Shift work may be necessary in this industry of which premiums are to be paid
- For new entrants into the industry rates of pay vary depending on the amount of hours worked
- Health & welfare benefits apply and pension is paid depending on the hours worked in the industry
- Wage rates start at a low of $13.00 per hour for the first 900 hours worked to a top rate of $26.86 after May 1/09 depending on the craft
