Why Should Education Mean so Much to Our Union?
Education is essential to living and working in our society. Our Union stands for education in many different forms;
Educate apprentices in the trades our Union represents,
Educate for training in health & safety so our members are safe every day,
Educate on the job, learning new methods and technologies of our work,
Educate journeypersons to upgrade in our training facilities to be the best,
Educate our members to understand who and what our Union is about,
Educate members about the importance of political action,
Educate the membership about market share and the purpose of organizing,
Educate our families about the benefits our Union provides, and
Educate society about the role working people and Unions have in everyday life
Scholarships Available
Our Union movement provides scholarships to our working families to further education;
“District Council 46 Scholarship Award” to children and grandchildren of members in good standing in a DC 46 Local Union. Two awards are granted every September in the amount of $2,000.00 each upon submission of an essay with a specific topic. Letters for application are sent to the membership each spring.

S. Frank “Bud” Raftery Award available to sons, daughters and legal dependents of IUPAT members. There are 10 scholarships awarded yearly in the amount of $2,000.00 each following the submission of an essay selected by the IUPAT Scholarship Committee. For more information go to the IUPAT website:

A.L. “Mike” Monroe/Ralph D. Williams, lll Sports Scholarship awarded to athletic students to pursue their ambitions in athletics while earning an education at an academic institute of their choice. The award is in the amount of $5,000.00 and one grant awarded in each region of the IUPAT. For more information go to:

Ontario Federation of Labour awards scholarships to a member or child of a member affiliated to the OFL. There are two scholarships of $2,000.00 each.

Maintenance Industry National Bursary provides a number of $500.00 post secondary education bursaries to children of union members. If you require forms and more information email at:

Union and Labour Leadership Education
The IUPAT believes in educating our members in areas of leadership. General President Williams will be introducing new programs for potential young leaders that he has branded as the
“Young Lions”
of our Union. Watch for these programs and opportunities coming in the near future.
District Council 46 offers a “New Member Orientation” program offered to new members of our Union. The 3 hour program consists of information about all levels of our Union, the benefits offered through our medical plans, pension information, legal issues, collective agreement information, and an opportunity to met the representatives and staff of the Council. Every new member has an obligation to attend and any member that has been in the Union regardless is welcome also.
